One question I get asked quite often is why I enjoy kayak fishing? To me the answer is pretty easy! I enjoy the simplicity of kayak fishing. In today’s world, the amount of fishing gear available can overwhelm any angler. From rods, reels, lures, electronics, nets and much more we have so many options that we don’t even know where to start. Throughout the years you come to find out that keeping it simple is the way to go. Having the right amount of gear and reducing the clutter can lead to more success when you’re out on the water!

When it comes to kayak fishing one of the biggest factors to my success comes from the ability to keep things simple. Unlike a boat where you have tons of storage and the luxury of packing and bringing along as much gear as you want, on a kayak you’re very limited to the amount of gear you can bring. You must be strategic when kayak fishing, every piece of equipment you bring along must have a purpose. But don’t get me wrong even I’ve had times where I wish I had brought that extra rod or tackle box. At the end of the day, working with what you have and challenging yourself is all part of the game when it comes to kayak fishing.

Another important part of keeping everything simple is the ability to stay organized. For the past few years, I have been using Native Watercraft Kayaks, specifically their Propel series of kayaks, and one of my favorite features is the amount of storage these kayaks offer. From the large front hatch to under the seat storage solutions these kayaks have it all, making your life very easy when it comes to fishing. Other tools I like to use to keep my gear organized consist of leashes and straps to make sure none of my expensive gear goes for a swim. Considering that you’re only bringing the essentials with you on your kayak trip, it’s important to make sure everything stays organized and secured as you’re traveling to your fishing spots. Also, keep in mind that on a kayak you’re much closer to the water than on a boat, making it much easier to drop and lose your items!

Kayak fishing to me is more than just heading out to catch that fish of a lifetime, it’s also about the challenges, adventures and learning experiences you get while you’re out on the water. Yes, fishing from a kayak can be difficult at times, especially when the wind and weather conditions are against you. Talking about the wind, it has been crazy these past few weeks! Making it extremely challenging to reach long distance fishing spots or even position yourself to fish a shoreline! But when it comes down to situations like these, keeping your kayak fishing setup simple allows you to shift and adapt easily, ultimately leading to success when you’re out on the water. Just picture having less worries, fewer things that can go wrong and fewer things that can break down, allowing you to devote more time to fishing!
