Kayak Fishing for Peacock Bass

Peacock Bass Fishing in Southwest Florida | Kayak Fishing For Peacock Bass

Southwest Florida offers endless fishing opportunities, but one of my favorites is targeting peacock bass. These fish are incredibly powerful, aggressive, and display a unique array of bright colors. Overall, its pretty awesome that we can target these fish here in Florida.

On this day we ventured to the Golden Gate canals near Naples, Florida, to fish for the elusive peacock bass. The morning was action packed since the beginning, I was able to strike a decent peacock right off the bat. Daynet followed with a beautiful healthy one as well.

Afterward we continued to work our way to the maze of canals and small lakes. When I’m fishing for these fish, I enjoy using artificial but the most efficient way of targeting them will be with live bait. As I approached an old dock I made a long cast passing the structure, as I worked my bait perfectly about 2 feet from the dock, I felt a strong hit and immediately knew it was a solid peacock. After fighting him for a couple of minutes, I was able to land him and snap a few photos.

The violent strike of these fish makes it all worth it. Its incredible that a freshwater species can display this much power, its an incredible fish without a doubt. After striking this beautiful fish we continued working the banks and deep edges in search of the next bite. That next bite didn’t take long at all.

Daynet was able to land her personal best peacock bass. The fish ate the smallest live bait we had, which is pretty insane! After an intense battle she was able to successfully land it and get a few photos. As we worked our way through the morning we were able to catch a few others along with largemouth bass and even some panfish!
