Hurricane Season Is Here – Kayak Fishing on Windy Days!

Storms at Fort Myers Beach
Tropical Storm Cristobal brings severe weather to Fort Myers Beach, FL

June 1st marks the beginning of Hurricane season here in Florida, running all the way through the end of November. For these next few months our weather patterns can be hard to predict. Summer thunderstorms can surprise you out of nowhere, so its very important to always keep a close eye on the radar and forecast.

This past weekend we got to feel the power of the first Gulf of Mexico Tropical Storm of 2020, Tropical Storm Cristobal. This storm carried winds of up to 35 mph and heavy rain fall to the Gulf Coast of the United States. Even though the storm made landfall Sunday afternoon on the Louisiana coast, the signs of this tropicalstorm were felt right here in Southwest Florida.

So what does all this rain mean for fishing in Southwest Florida? Fishing in Florida tends to be excellent all year round. It all depends on what species your targeting. From bass fishing to saltwater fishing the action stays pretty consistent throughout this time of year.

Despite the strong winds we decided to head out for a few hours and seek shelter along the residential canals and back bays in the Fort Myers Beach area. Kayak fishing in the wind can certainly be challenging at times, but it can also be rewarding!

Kayak Fishing the Residential Canals for Snooks and Tarpons

After spending couple hours skipping docks and mangroves, I wasn’t able to connect with anything decent. The snooks were not cooperating, but I was able to pull a decent size snapper out of one of the docks. Then the rain came through which was the perfect time to call it for the day.
