Snook Fishing in Southwest Florida

Big Snook From a Tiny Creek|Summer Kayaking Fishing in Southwest Florida

Working our way through the mangrove creeks!

Summer time in Southwest Florida can have its pros and cons. One of those cons, being the intense thunderstorms that creep up on you out of nowhere and another is the scorching heat of the mid-day summer sun. So with that being said my favorite time to head out during these months is during the first 3 hours after sunrise and before sunset.

Shawn working the mangroves shoreline!

On this summer morning I meet up with Shawn and we quickly headed out to work the mangrove shorelines. Within the first few minutes we weren’t seeing much action. Working some very productive shorelines without getting a single bite is always challenging. But as we made our way through the creek system the mouths of smaller feeder creeks were teeming with life.

Hooked up to a solid snook!

As I approached a small feeder creek I pitched a white weedless rigged fluke, gave it a few twitches and immediately saw the explosion. The snook ran straight for the mangrove, but lucky my Native Watercraft Titan 10.5 has instant reverse and I was able to tow the fish right out of the trees. After an intense battle, I was finally able to bring him boat-side.

After a few short runs around the kayak, I managed to land the fish and snap a few photos. Thanks to Shawn for the awesome shots. I quickly worked on reviving this tried snook and letting her go on her way. Its amazing how much clean water really matters. This fish was extremely healthy and had a beautiful coloration.

Going in for the release!

We continued to work the creek system eventually headed out to a bay, where we had hopes of getting on some trout. But unfortunately, only the ladyfish wanted to cooperated. Overall we head back after a quick 3 hours session, its not always about catching a ton of fish, sometimes its quality over quantity.
